Khaled el-Rashidi, a young man in his early twenties, was shot in the head and died on Wednesday night in clashes between security forces and residents of the Nahia neighborhood in Kerdasah near Cairo, April 6 Youth Movement member Sherif el-Roubi told The Cairo Post Thursday.
Rashidi was a member of the April 6 Youth Movement branch called “The Democratic Front of Ahmed Maher,” and he was returning home when the incident happened, Roubi said. “He was not taking part in any demonstrations,” Roubi said. Media reported the police stormed the neighborhood to try and disperse an anti-regime protest.
“I don’t know what was going on in Nahia, but I heard that there have been ongoing conflicts between the police and the residents for almost a week,” Roubi added. “I also know another man named Hamdy el-Seidy was killed.”
The Freedom for the Brave movement supporting prisoners said in a post on Facebook that Seidy died from suffocating on tear gas used by police. Social media users created a hashtag they called “Nahia is bleeding” under which some reported that four people were killed in the Nahia clash.
While the Ministry of Interior has not officially commented, its spokesperson Hany Abdulatif confirmed in statements to The Cairo Post Thursday that two people died as a result of confrontations between pro-Muslim Brotherhood supporters and police forces in Nahia Wednesday.
“A demonstration started around 7 p.m. on Wednesday and security forces entered the neighborhood to disperse it, which resulted in clashes between the two sides,” Abdulatif said.
The ministry spokesperson denied that regular clashes were taking place in Nahia, saying it was “just this one incident.”
