Two Egyptian nationals were killed in Libya Saturday after a bomb fell on a bakery where they were working, Al-Masry Al-Youm reported Sunday.
A source in a medical center in Benghazi confirmed told Al-Masry Al-Youm that it had received four injured persons and the bodies of two Egyptians, following the shelling of the Benghazi bakery.
A number of Egyptian nationals in different Libyan cities have been killed during the past few months amid fierce civil war between two Islamist militias. The premises of the Egyptian embassy in Tripoli, which is held by militias, was the target of a car bomb Nov. 13.
Amid the turmoil, thousands of Egyptians have fled ongoing violence in Libya following warnings from the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Algeria has opened its border with Libya for Egyptian nationals to flee the violence.
Libya was among the new areas of extension to the so-called Islamic Caliphate as announced in a Thursday audio recording believed to be of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the self-proclaimed caliph of the Islamic State group.
As Baghdadi listed the new demarcations of the caliphate he seeks to establish, he addressed his supporters in Libya as well as in other countries in the audio to continue their ongoing fight and erupt “volcanoes of Jihad everywhere.”
A military–led campaign to eliminate terror from the country was launched in May 2014 by Libyan General Khalifa Hifter in different cities that have been recently controlled by the Islamist militias.
Egypt has also called upon the international community to start a “decisive strategy against extremists,” during a meeting at the United Nations General Assembly between the Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shokry, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and other top officials.
