Ahmed Shafiq named new chief of National Movement Party

Former Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq has won the presidency for the Egyptian National Movement Party.

Shafiq, who has been living in the United Arab Emirates since June 2012, founded the party the same year.

Shafiq, the only candidate who stood for elections, spoke to his party members via video conference, which took place at Al-Azhar conference hall.

Shafiq earlier told Al-Masry Al-Youm that he was pressured to run for elections despite being abroad. He said he would take advantage of many prominent figures that could run the party along with him. “My travel will not prevent me from running the party. I will return to Cairo soon after ending legal measures,” he said.

Shafiq also said that his party will run for parliamentary elections through single-winner and list-based seats. Names of candidates will be declared in January

Ibrahim Darwish was the first president of the party after it was founded. He resigned after protests against his leadership by party leaders. A committee was formed to run the party until new chief was elected.
