Unknown assailants threw an improvised bomb at the home of Judge Khaled Mahgoub in the southen Cairo suburb of Helwan before fleeing the scene.

No injuries were reported in the attack in the early hours of Thursday, which caused windows and parts of the walls of the house to break or crumble.

Mahgoub has presided over one of the trials against Morsi where the ousted leader, along with 130 defendants, faces charges over a prison break during the 2011 revolution.

Bombings and drive-by shootings have become commonplace in Egypt since Morsi’s removal, with attacks mainly targeting police and army personnel in what militants say is revenge for a state crackdown on Islamists.

The former Islamist leader Morsi, who was overthrown in July 2013, is facing two other court cases over charges including espionage and incitement to murder.

Morsi could face the death penalty if convicted..
