Court sends 66 to prison over post-Rabaa dispersal violence

The Giza Criminal Court sentenced on Monday 66 defendants to prison over complicity in the violence which followed the deadly dispersal of two pro-Mohamed Mursi camps in August 2013.The Giza Criminal Court sentenced on Monday 66 defendants to prison over complicity in the violence which followed the deadly dispersal of two pro-Mohamed Mursi camps in August 2013.

The sentenced defendants include Islamist Lawyer Mamdouh Ismail, who was sentenced in absentia to life in prison. The remaining 65 defendants received prison sentences for periods ranging from three to 10 years.

The court also acquitted 14 defendants.

The convicted defendants were accused of murder, attempted murder, joining a "terrorist" group, vandalism, and "disturbing public peace and security."

All defendants will be put on a three-year probation after their release from prison, as per the ruling.

Violence erupted nationwide following the forcible dispersal of the pro-Mursi Rabaa al-Adawiya and Nahda sit-ins on August 14, 2013.
