Egypt seeks international intervention in Libya

President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi called Monday Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi who offered his condolences for the killing of 21 Egyptian Coptic Christians by a branch of the Islamic State group in Libya, announced the Egyptian presidential spokesperson Alaa Youssef.

Sunday evening the Islamic State group in Libya published a video showing the mass beheading of 21 Egyptians who had been kidnapped in Sirte in early January.

Both leaders discussed the necessity to combat terrorism, and Renzi affirmed his country’s support to Egypt’s efforts.

Three days ago, Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni said in an interview with SkyTG24 that his country was ready to join a U.N-led force to combat the “an active terrorist threat,” Reuters reported.

Renzi called Monday on the United Nation Security Council to send a U.N.-led “mission” to Libya as fast as possible, the Italian News Agency Aki reported Monday.

Meanwhile, the president received a call from Jordanian King Abdullah II who offered his condolences after the mass execution.
