More Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated NGOs dissolved in Egypt

Minister of Social Solidarity Ghada Waly issued a decision Sunday to dissolve 112 more non-governmental organisations (NGOs) affiliated with the now “terrorist” Muslim Brotherhood, state media reported.Minister of Social Solidarity Ghada Waly issued a decision Sunday to dissolve 112 more non-governmental organisations (NGOs) affiliated with the now “terrorist” Muslim Brotherhood, state media reported.

The dissolved organisations include 39 in Menufiya, 15 in Beni Suef, 35 in Daqahleya, 17 in Gharbeya, five in Ismailia, and one in Qena.

In an official statement, Waly explained that “the decision comes in accordance with the court order that banned the Muslim Brotherhood and consequently ordered the banning of activities and confiscating properties of organisations affiliated with the group”.

Waly confirmed that these organisations “do not have headquarters and did not exercise any activities for a while”.

Law 84/2002 gives the Egyptian authorities the power to shut down, freeze assets, block funding, confiscate property, and reject the governing boards of any NGO.

The decision is the second, following a previous order to dissolve 169 Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated NGOs in February.

The Brotherhood was officially designated a terrorist organisation in a December 2013 cabinet decree, and the decision was upheld, by court order, in February 2014.
