Dual citizens may run for the parliament, according to a Saturday ruling by the Constitutional Court, voiding a presidential decree banning Egyptians with foreign passports from running for the parliamentary elections, Youm7 reported.
The case is the second to receive agreement from the court; an article on dividing constituencies was ruled unconstitutional March 1. The High Elections Committee decided to delay polling until the law is amended; President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi requested the amendment procedures not last longer than a month.
The article on exercising political rights was also challenged before the court, but the judges ruled the code constitutional.
The Cabinet approved the elections law in December despite the controversy on its anticipated unconstitutionality.
Egypt’s 2012 parliament was dissolved approximately six months after installment by the Constitutional Court, which ruled it had been based on unconstitutional elections. The country has not had a legislative body since then.
