Brotherhood funds committee seizes assets of 16 people

The committee tasked with managing Muslim Brotherhood funds said on Sunday that it seized the funds of 16 Brotherhood members. The committee tasked with managing Muslim Brotherhood funds said on Sunday that it seized the funds of 16 Brotherhood members.

The committee also decided to seize six companies and three international schools belonging to the Brotherhood, the committee's Secretary-General Mohamed Yaser Aboul Fotouh said in a statement.

The committee was formed after a decision by an urgent matters court in September 2013, which banned the Brotherhood.

The ruling stipulates banning the activities of any association that is branched from the Brotherhood, that was founded by Brotherhood funds, or that receives any form of support from the Brotherhood.

By January, the committee said the assets of 901 Muslim Brotherhood members and 1096 associations had been seized so far. It had also seized 82 schools by then.

In February and March, Egypt's ministry of social solidarity shut down more than 250 non-governmental organisations for "ties with the Brotherhood."

Egypt listed the Brotherhood as a terrorist organisation in December 2013 and insists it is behind the wave of militancy which has targeted security personnel since July 2013. The Brotherhood continuously denies the accusations.
