15 arrested in Tanta for complicity in high explosives manufacturing

A total of 15 have been arrested for their alleged participation in manufacturing explosives seized in Gharbia, in the Nile Delta, Monday, Youm7 reported.

Four large cartons of explosives were found inside a store in Tanta city; one carton of which would have been able to “take down a residential tower,” a security source in Gharbia security directorate told Youm7 Tuesday.

A series of secret missions in cooperation between National Security and Criminal Investigations led to the discovery of the store, the source said, adding that the store was cordoned off and experts were dealing with the cartons lest they detonate.

Two of nine suspects had been arrested, but interrogations with police led to more detentions. The source said the alleged perpetrators were planning to execute “terrorist operations” in Tanta in the coming period.

In January, the police seized three tons of explosives in a plastics factory in Sharqia, also in the Delta.

Bombings and arson have targeted the police, military and public utilities in hundreds of incidents since the 2013 ouster of President Mohamed Morsi. Many civilians and private properties have been affected by deaths, injuries and damage.
