Egypt, Ethiopia presidents discuss water security after GERD agreement
President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi held talks with Ethiopian President Mulatu Teshome on Tuesday where both agreed on opening a new page in relations based on confidence-building and achieving mutual interest and benefit.

Both presidents stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation between the two countries in all fields.

Al-Sisi highlighted channelling the positivity that resulted from signing the agreement on Monday in Khartoum. He said the agreement is a step that requires more detailed agreements to clarify the application of the general principles, and to dispel any doubts about the dam.

The Ethiopian president reassured that his country is committed to avoiding a decrease in the water share of downstream countries, a major concern expressed on several occasions by Egypt.

Al-Sisi said that “good intentions” should be translated into agreements for trust, security and cooperation between the future generations of the three countries.

Teshome expressed encouragement of Egyptian businessmen to increase investment and trade with Ethiopia.

Al-Sisi met also Tuesday with a number of Egyptian and Ethiopian businessmen, with the presence of the Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn.

The president noted that Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia represent a huge market of approximately 250 million people, and enjoy large investment opportunities.

The meetings come as part of a three day tour of Al-Sisi in Sudan and Ethiopia.
