The Attorney General’s office has appealed a Cairo court decision to release two police officers accused of torturing a lawyer to death on a bail worth EGP 10,000 ($1,300,) Youm7 reported Sunday.
On Saturday, the North Cairo Court ordered the release of the two Homeland Security police officers following a request submitted by the officers’ defense team.
The appeal is to be considered during a court session scheduled for Sunday, a prosecution official told Youm7.
On Feb. 26, Head of East Cairo Prosecution Bakr Ahmed Bakr ordered the detention of the two officers on charges of “torture, murder and physical assault” of Karem Hamdy; a lawyer who was jailed pending investigation in the Mataria police station and died while the two officers were interrogating him.
Hamdy, as well as three others, was arrested and was investigated on accusations including arms possession, involvement in anti-government violence, protesting against the security forces and affiliation to the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood group, the state-run Al-Ahram reported.
A forensic report, published earlier this month, said Hamdy’s corpse showed bruises all over his body, bleeding in the chest, neck and face, fractures to his ribs and that he died following a cerebral haemorrhage, according to Al-Ahram.
