The illicit gains authority is to officially appeal the verdict of former interior minister Habib El-Adly who was acquitted on charges of corruption, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.
Youssef Othman, head of the authority, said on Tuesday that they will issue an official appeal against the release of the Mubarak-era interior minister who was released from jail on 25 March after being acquitted of all charges.
“The authority discovered legal mistakes in the court ruling that acquitted El-Adly, and that the ruling violated the law,” said Othman during a meeting with journalists in the justice ministry.
The authority has prepared the legal papers for the appeal which will be presented to the general prosecutor Hisham Barakat.
After four years behind bars, El-Adly was recently acquitted on charges of using his political influence to acquire illicit gains amounting to LE181 million ($23.72 million).
Last year, a court acquitted El-Adly, six of his aides, and former president Hosni Mubarak on charges of complicity in the killing of protesters during the January 2011 uprising.
El-Adly served as Mubarak's minister of interior from 1997 till 2011.
In a separate case, El-Adly also saw an initial 12-year sentence and LE15 million worth of fines over charges of corruption and money laundering dropped.
