106 prisoners pardoned per Sisi decree

A total of 106 prisoners have been selected to be released into society, per a presidential decree pardoning prisoners with final sentences, Youm7 reported Thursday.

A committee that includes members from the departments of the Ministry of Interior, National Security, General Security, Drug Control, and Investigations of Public Funds have agreed on the names of the prisoners after studying their cases and behavior.

According to President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi’s decree, issued in January, released prisoners must have served half the term of their final sentences, and their offences must not have been violent crimes or attacking public or police properties.

Last month, 68 inmates were released per the same decree. The prosecution also released 120 detainees pending investigation in March, and 100 others in January.

Some of the defendants released, whether by the prosecution or the Prisons Authority, were jailed for violating the protest law. Thousands have been jailed for violating the controversial law since it entered into force in November 2013, but the charge is usually accompanied by arson, blocking roads, sabotage and possessing explosives.
