Taha al-Sharidy, head of the Matareya Fishermen Union, said on Sunday evening that a Sudanese court sentenced 106 Egyptian fishermen to six months in prison, confiscated three boats and imposed a fine of five thousand Sudanese pounds on each of them, for violating international fishing laws and entering Sudanese territorial waters without permit.
He said the boats were sailing along the Sudanese coast on their way to to Eritrea, where they had permits to fish.
The Egyptian Consul in Sudan was present during the investigations, and said that he cannot interfere with judicial rulings, adding that an Egyptian lawyer is appealing the verdict. He urged the Daqahlia governor to compensate the families of the fishermen.
