Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab inaugurated Thursday digging work on first part of the fourth phase of the Greater Cairo Metro Network Line 3 project, Youm7 reported.
“At a total cost of 4.3 billion EGP ($600 million,) the 5.15 kilometer-long tunnel will start from the Haroun area in Cairo’s northern district of Heliopolis and include five stations: Haroun, Heliopolis Square, Alf Maskan, al-Shams Club and al-Nozha 1,” according to a Thursday’s cabinet statement.
“The digging work of the tunnel and the construction work in the five new stations is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2017,” Transport Minister Hany Dahy was quoted by Youm7.
The second part of the fourth phase will include a 6.45 kilometer-long track above ground and will include other five stations starting from al-Nozha 2 and ending at the Al Obour city north of Cairo, Chairman of the National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) Ismail El Nagdy told Youm7 Thursday.
The Cairo Metro Line 3 extends from Cairo’s the northwest district of Imbaba to the northeast nearby the Cairo airport. The line will cross the River Nile twice, once at the western branch between Imbaba and Zamalek Island, and again at the eastern branch between Zamalek and downtown Cairo. The total length of the line is approximately 30.6 km, of which 28.1 km is an underground section.
The second phase of Cairo’s third underground line, linking between the city’s district of Abasseya and its northeastern suburb of Heliopolis, was inaugurated in May 2014 by Egypt’s interim President Adly Mansour.
The first phase, which links two of Cairo’s busiest squares of Attaba and Abasseya, runs for 4.3 km and comprises five underground stations, was inaugurated in July 2007.
