4-yr-old child dies after falling in a sewer

A 4-year-old child drowned in a sewer Tuesday morning, during the periodical purification process for the sewers in Ma’sarah, Youm7 reported.

The child was in the company of a friend of the family who left him outside a supermarket as they shopped. A sewer purification process was being performed outside the market, therefore manhole covers were left open. The child fell in one of those sewers, the spokesperson for the Holding Company for Water and Wastewater (HCWW) Mohy el-Serafy told Youm7.

The body of the child has not been found yet, according to Serafy, who told Youm7 that the sewer is 8 meters deep and the affiliated pipes have been blocked, so as to prevent the child from being swept away by the moving water.

Mostafa Madbouly Minister of Housing and Urban Development suspended the manager of the wastewater company branch in Ma’sarah, Cairo, along with all the responsible officials for the periodical purification of the sewage, to be referred to investigations.

A 3-year-old child died after falling in a 12-meter-deep sewer in south Giza, Cairo in February. Area residents said that there are an estimated 32 open sewers in the area.
