The suspended sentence of one year in prison of prominent activist Alaa Abd el-Fattah was upheld Monday; he is charged with torching former Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq’s presidential campaign headquarters in May 2012.
Abd El-Fattah had challenged the ruling due to “contrived investigations” carried out by the National Security, as he denies he was present when the building was burned down.
The case dates back May 28, 2012, when a group of people torched the Cairo building where Shafiq’s campaign was administered, as protesters were demonstrating outside. The National Security investigations say that Abd el-Fattah and his sister, award-winning Mona Seif, were at the protest.
Although Shafiq dropped the case, the prosecution resumed the trial.
Abd Al Fattah received was sentenced to five years in prison in February over charges of violating the 2013 protest law, along with 24 others .
