Lawyer files a complaint against 15 footballers over funding Muslim Brotherhood

Lawyer Samri Sabry filed a complaint against 15 Egyptian footballers accusing them of affiliation with the Muslim Brotherhood, and demanding an investigation of their assets Tuesday.Lawyer Samri Sabry filed a complaint against 15 Egyptian footballers accusing them of affiliation with the Muslim Brotherhood, and demanding an investigation of their assets Tuesday.

Sabry’s complaint requested the authorities look into the footballers’ bank balances as they could be “implicated in funding Muslim Brotherhood terror activities”. The majority of the players used to be former players for Al Ahly club: most notably Ahmed Fathi, Hadi Khasba and Mokhtar Mokhtar.

Last Friday, the state-run committee tasked with inventorying and freezing the funds of the Brotherhood, announced the seizure of prominent player Mohamed Aboutrika’s share in a company allegedly affiliated with the group.

The player filed an appeal before the committee to cancel the seizure decision, but it was rejected Monday.

Investigations carried out by Egypt’s Central Auditing Organization have revealed that Aboutrika, alongside other MB members, has been a partner in a travel company since 2012. The company was founded during the tenure of Egypt’s former President Mohamed Morsi with a capital estimated at 2.5 million EGP ($327,495.)

According to the investigations, the funds were used to “finance the terroristic operations carried out following the deadly dispersal of the MB’s sit-ins at Rabaa al-Adaweya and Nahda squares in August 2013.
