Aswany jabs at Sisi’s interference in Wafd Party crisis

Prominent author Alaa al-Aswany has sarcastically reacted to President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s intervention to resolve conflicts within the veteran Wafd Party which endanger its stability before the Supreme Board elections slated for Friday.

“Sisi interfered to end disputes within Wafd Party just like Field Marshal Amer did in the 1960s in order to prevent Ahly Sports Club from relegating,” Aswany tweeted, referring to late Defense Minister Abdel Hakim Amer who, reportedly tasked an army general, Abdel Mohsen Mortagy, to head the club and help it out of its deteriorating conditions, which affected its premier league ranking.

Aswany has been a vocal opponent to the regimes of Hosni Mubarak, Mohamed Morsi and Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

Wafd Party, a major supporter of Sisi's roadmap which was announced after the ouster of Mohamed Morsi in 2013, has been witnessing infighting since several members challenged the legitimacy of the Friday elections and questioned the financial transparency of its chairman, al-Sayyed al-Badawy.
