A police brigadier was killed and a police colonel injured when an IED (improvised explosive device) detonated Wednesday in North Sinai, MENA news agency reported.
According to a statement published by Egypt's Ministry of Interior, Brigadier Ahmed Ibrahim from the Criminal Investigations unit in North Sinai directorate was killed while Colonel Moataz Radwan, the head of Vice Investigation in the directorate, was injured on the highway near Al-Arish city, on their way back from a security raid.
Egypt's army is currently fighting a campaign against a decade-long militant insurgency in North Sinai.
Militants have killed hundreds of police and army personnel in the past year and a half in North Sinai, while the authorities have announced that hundreds of militants have been killed in military campaigns in the governorate.
The Islamist group Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis has claimed responsibility for most attacks against security forces in Sinai.
