Court of Cassation has approved Thursday an appeal presented by Egypt’s Attorney General against an earlier court ruling that cleared former President Hosni Mubarak over his role in the death of protesters during the 2011 uprising, Youm7 reported.
The Court overturned all rulings of acquittal granted to Mubarak, his former Minister of Interior Habib al-Adly, and six of his aides over killing peaceful protesters during the January 25 Revolution; it also quashed acquittals of profiteering and wasting public funds in which Mubarak, his two sons along with the fugitive business tycoon Hussein Salem are convicted.
The one-panel court has set Nov. 5 to consider the retrial for the last time, said the presiding judge Anwar Mohamed Gabry. The court is the only legal authority sees the final steps of legal procedures of a case.
On Nov. 29, 2014, Mubarak, his two sons and Salem were acquitted of all charges related to corruption, and the charges against them alleging they were responsible in the 2011 killing of January 25 Revolution protesters were dismissed, as a Cairo Court said the charges were groundless. Attorney General Hesham Barakat challenged against the acquittal in the same day.
The Attorney General has submitted the court 32 legal reasons to accept the challenge, said the court.
Although the civil plaintiffs have submitted their challenges against the acquittal, the court has rejected their requests.
The plaintiffs will hold a press conference Thursday afternoon to comment on the Court of Cassation’s decisions.
