Egypt’s Ministry of Education has taken over 104 schools allegedly affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood, Youm7 reported Monday.
A council formed by the ministry to manage Brotherhood schools seized around 18 schools in the past few days in Port Said, Mansoura and Cairo governorates, an official source at the ministry told Youm7.
In January 2014, the Ministry of Education banned all extra curricula unapproved by the ministry but taught at schools affiliated with the Brotherhood in January 2014, as per orders by Minister of education Mahmoud Abou.
In September 2013, a court ruling was issued to ban the Brotherhood, deeming it a “terrorist organization” and confiscating all its assets.
The Brotherhood owns 60 schools nationwide, and the decision of the Education Ministry would be to either transfer their administration and finances to the authorities or to nationalize them, according to Abu el-Nasr.
