Of the 23 sentenced, only 11 were in court, the others were tried in absentia.

The court acquitted 13 other defendants, only seven of whom were present.

The defendants were fined a total of LE275,000 ($35,000) for the damage they caused.

On 2 August 2013, tens of Brotherhood supporters attempted to storm the MPC but police foiled their attempt and arrested some of them.

They were charged with terrorising citizens, torching police and civilian vehicles, attempting to murder civilians and police personnel, and damaging public property.

The events followed the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi on 3 July and the arrest of a number of Muslim Brotherhood leaders.

The MPC, located in 6 October City, a satellite city on the outskirts of Cairo, is home to most private Egyptian television and radio stations.
