Egypt airport authorities have barred a leftist activist from travelling to Qatar, with security officials saying he is on a travel ban list.
Khaled El-Sayed, who claims he was tortured by police last year, was arrested Thursday morning as he was about to travel to Doha, Qatar to visit his wife.
Security officials told Aswat Masriya that El-Sayed was on a no-travel list over violence-related accusations.
"His luggage was unloaded from the plane and he was handed in to authorities to take the necessary legal measures," a security source said.
His lawyer, Halim Heneish, was not immediately available to comment on whether his client is officially accused in court cases.
El-Sayed, a member of the Youth for Justice and Freedom Movement, has been arrested several times since the 2011 uprising that toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak.
In January 2014, he was arrested during protests commemorating the third anniversary of the popular revolt and spent over a month in jail, during which he claimed he was subject to torture along with others.
Since the 2013 ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi, thousands of his supporters have been jailed and hundreds sentenced to death in mass trials. Dozens of non-Islamist activists have also been imprisoned as part of the crackdown.
Several human rights and pro-democracy activists have been banned from travelling in recent months.
