Abdallah Morsi, the son of ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi, was released from prison on Tuesday after serving a one year-sentence for possession of hashish.
The 21-year old, who is the youngest of Morsi's sons, was freed by Qalyoubiya governorate authorities along with his friend Emad El-Shamy.
The charges stem from an incident in March 2014 when Abdallah El-Shamy and Emad El-Shamy were stopped and searched at a police checkpoint on their way from the Nile Delta's Sharqiya governorate to New Cairo, and were found in possession of two joints of hashish. They were sentenced in July 2014.
At the time of their arrest, Abdallah's older brother, Osama, posted a statement on Facebook saying the allegations were false and an attempt to "taint the image of honest people."
Ever since his ouster in July 2013, Morsi has been tried and convicted in a number of cases on a multitude of charges that include espionage.
In June, Morsi was sentenced to death for violence charges relating to a prison break in 2011.
The verdict can still be appealed.
