Over the course of time, I have come to realize that there are still many obstacles that are preventing the moving forward for Egypt. Terrorism is the obvious problem at the moment. It even seems overkill to mention bombs, explosions, murders, abductions etc...It happens just way too much. And it’s even to the point now where it’s not a shock anymore, just a sad reminder that we are living in an unsafe, unstable environment.
Really, when I think about it, however, there is more to Egypt’s instability than just terrorism. We are still in an environment where the older generations are stubborn, judgemental, and somewhat of fanatics. Just the other day a tourist was walking with a short sleeved shirt, and she was berated by men, and frowned at by all the covered up women. How can we move forward if we are getting caught in what other people are wearing?
There is still that lack of fundamental freedom. Some may say “just go to Maadi, or Heliopolis, and you find women barely dressed” but the point is, freedom shouldn’t just be for the upper class, or for the elite. What if a middle class woman wants to wear whatever she wants when walking down the streets? What would it take for a man not to look at her like he is raping her with his eyes?
What would it take for our streets to be safe and our children to play outside? I can’t imagine my younger family members alone at night around the streets or going to a restaurant without me watching them, what if someone kidnapped them?
Furthermore, didn’t we just have a case where a corrupted teacher destroyed an innocent student’s hard work just because of her religion?
