A total of 27 defendants, allegedly belong to the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) group, were acquitted of attempting to raid a police station south of Giza in 2013, Youm7 reported Sunday.The defendants, including former parliamentarian Mahmoud Amer, faced charges of attempting to raid Awseem police station, joining the outlawed MB and possessing firearms.
The attack took place following the deadly dispersal of pro-MB sit-ins at Rabaa al-Adaweya and Nahda squares in August 2013 that killed at least 600 people.
The Rabaa al-Adaweya and Nahda sit-ins began on Friday 24 June, 2013 in support of former president Mohamed Morsi who was ousted following a mass protest against his rule. The dispersal was followed by a wide-scale wave of violence across the country.
A total of 22 defendants, allegedly belong to MB group, were sentenced to life in absentia by a military court Thursday over attacking a police station in Upper Egypt’s governorate of Asyut.
