Police officer sentenced to 5 yr for killing 37 alleged Brotherhood inmates

The Khanka Misdemeanor Court of Appeals on Thursday sentenced a police officer to five years hard labor over killing 37 prisoners allegedly belong to the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, Youm7 reported.The Khanka Misdemeanor Court of Appeals on Thursday sentenced a police officer to five years hard labor over killing 37 prisoners allegedly belong to the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, Youm7 reported.

Three other officers, involved in the same case, were handed down a one-year suspended sentence.
 
On August 18, 2013 the Heliopolis police station deputy director Amr Farouk along with the other three officers threw tear gas bombs inside a prisoner transport vehicle with 45 prisoners inside, killing 37 and injuring seven others while they were in their way from the Heliopolis police station to Abu Zabaal Prison.
 
Investigation revealed that the prison transport truck was designed to carry no more than 24 inmates; however, the charged police officers loaded it with 45 inmates
 
In October 2013, Attorney- General Office has referred the police officers to Khanka misdemeanor court that has sentenced those defendants to 10 years in jail over killing the 37 inmates.
 
However, Khanka Misdemeanor Court of Appeals acquitted the defendants in June 2014 while on June 22; the Court of Cassation accepted the General Prosecution’s appeal of an acquittal.
 
The prisoners have been arrested following August 2013 dispersal of pro-Muslim Brotherhood sit-ins at Cairo’s Rabaa al-Adaweya and Nahda Squares, demanded reinstatement of former Islamist President Mohamed Morsi.
