More citizens will be exempted from the income tax, as the government approved on Wednesday to increase the exemption bracket from 5,000 EGP ($638) to 6,500 EGP ($830) a year.
Citizens within the bracket who work in both the government and public sectors will be exempted.
The amendment to the income tax law is “an unprecedented success in negotiations between workers’ representatives and the state,” Mamdouh Belal, head of the General Trade Union of Workers, told Youm7, calling on President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi to ratify the amendment as soon as possible.
In July, the Cabinet approved an amendment to the income tax law, reducing taxes from 30 to 22.5 percent and suspending the capital gains tax for two years.
