Port Said Criminal Court sentenced Muslim Brotherhood Supreme Guide Mohamed Badie and top leaders Safwat Hegazi and Mohamed El-Beltagi to life in imprisonment Saturday over the storming of a police station in Port said in August 2013.
The court sentenced a total of 95 defendents, including the Brotherhood leaders, to life. Another 28 defendants received 10-year sentences while others were acquitted.
The defendants were found guilty of inciting Brotherhood members in August 2013 to storm Al-Arab Police Station in Port Said in order to kill its police officers, steal the station’s weapons, and set detainees free. The events lead to the death of five people, while police personnel were injured.
A life sentence means 25 years in jail, according to the Egyptian penal code.
Badie has received several death and life imprisonment sentences following a crackdown on Islamists since the ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi, who hails from the Brotherhood, in 2013.
In May 2015, Badie and others, including Morsi, were sentenced to death over the Wadi El-Natroun Prison breakout in 2011.
In July 2014, Badie, Hegazi and El-Beltagi were sentenced to death over inciting others to clashes in Qalyoubia, resulting in the deaths of two civilians.
Badie was also sentenced to death along with 683 other defendants in April 2014 in connection to the storming of a police station in Menya. However, the court ruling was overturned in February 2015 and the defendants were given a retrial.
