An Egyptian criminal court sentenced on Monday leading Muslim Brotherhood member Mohsen Rady, along with seven other alleged members, to 20 years in prison over violence-related charges, in the latest court decision targeting the once ruling group.
Rady is a former Brotherhood MP who was elected to parliament in 2005 and again in 2011. He was also a senior leader of the movement's political arm, the Freedom and Justice Party.
Rady and seven other Brotherhood members were convicted of "attempted murder of civilians and police, weapons possession, and show of force."
The allegations stem from clashes that took place in Banha, north of Cairo, during the July 2013 protests that culminated with the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi.
In addition to the prison sentences, the defendants were fined LE1000 each (approximately $130).
Rady's lawyer Abdel Hakim El-Deeb said his client will appeal the verdict in the coming days.
Since being toppled from power in 2013, the Muslim Brotherhood has been subject to the worst crackdown in its 87-year history, with authorities declaring it a terrorist organization.
Most of the group's upper echelons, including Egypt's former president Morsi and thousands of its members and supporters, are behind bars.
On Saturday, Brotherhood leader Mohamed Badie and 16 others were sentenced to life in prison on charges related to the killing of five people in an attack on a police station in 2013.
Badie has already been sentenced to both death and life in prison in other trials. These sentences can be appealed.
