Dozens of high school students protest in solidarity with Mariam

Dozens of high school students protested Thursday outside the Ministry of Education in solidarity with student Mariam Zaki who got zeros in all subjects.

The ministry was slammed after the student, Mariam Zaki, received a null score in all of her final exams of Thanawyia Amma (secondary education or high schools) that enable students to enter universities. The Minya-born student filed a suit against the ministry over her scores, claiming her answer sheets were “forged” and the original ones were passed to another student. However, her case was rejected.

Protesting students raised photos of Mariam, chanting “O Minister, do a change, Thanawyia is fate determination,” and “we will not let Mariam’s right go in vain.”

Security forces were deployed around the ministry headquarters during the protest, Youm7 reported Thursday.

In a statement, Egyptian Union for Human Rights called for Minister Moheb al-Rafie’s ouster over Mariam’s case.

Mhalab has ordered to form a committee to examine Mariam’s handwriting following calligraphy experts has said in a report that the handwriting of the answer sheets of zeros match with Mariam’s. She has appealed the report.

Rafie held Tuesday a press conference on Mariam’s case, saying that if it was proved that Mariam is right, she cannot legally re-take her exams.
