Shaaban al-Shamy, the presiding judge who sentenced former Islamist President Mohamed Morsi and number of Muslim Brotherhood members to death over a 2011 prison break was appointed as Minister of Justice aide for Forensic Medicine Sunday.
Egypt’s Supreme Judicial Council appointed Shamy as an aide to the Minister of Justice Ahmed el-Zend, state-owned news agency MENA reported. Shamy is presiding judge of Cairo Criminal Court of Appeals.
On June 16, Shamy upheld Morsi and 85 convicts’ initial death sentences over charges in an 2011 prison break and handed down life imprisonment sentences against Morsi and 16 others over charges of spying for Hamas and the Iranian Revolutionary Guards.
Shamy also was considering a number of terrorism-related charges against MB members.
“I will conduct an administrative evaluation of the entire forensic doctors to develop the Forensic Medicine and be more accurate and neutral concerning the cases,” he told Youm7 after assuming the new position.
On Wednesday, the Council appointed Judge Ghada el-Shahawy, as Zend’s aide for women and children rights; she is is the first Egyptian woman to serve as a justice minister’s aide.
