Convict sentenced to life for torching Kerdasa Virgin Mary Church

The Giza Criminal Court on Wednesday upheld a life sentence handed down in April to a convict for arson of Kerdasa’s Virgin Mary Church, Youm7 reported.The Giza Criminal Court on Wednesday upheld a life sentence handed down in April to a convict for arson of Kerdasa’s Virgin Mary Church, Youm7 reported.

Tarek Ibrahim was given the same sentence in April but in absentia before he was arrested and a retrial was initiated. Ibrahim, along with other 68 defendants were then sentenced to life and fined 20,000 EGP ($2,560) for torching the Virigin Mary Coptic Church located in Cairo’s southern suburb of Kerdasa nearby Giza Pyramids, Youm7 reported.
 
The April court ruling also convicted two minors who were sentenced to 10 years in jail. The convicts faced numerous charges including attempted murder, joining the banned Muslim Brotherhood group and committing acts of violence in the wake of the dispersal of pro-Muslim Brotherhood sit-ins at the Rabaa al-Adaweya and al-Nahda squares in Cairo and Giza.
