6 of October city bans Tok Toks, remove street occupancies

The 6 of October city in Giza governorate has begun to enforce a ban on tok toks (three-wheeled motorcycle taxis) in a campaign to restore order to the city, Youm7 reported Monday.

The same decision was reiterated in new Damietta city, which is located in the northern tip of the western mainland of the Nile River’s branch Damietta. The campaign included the removal of violating buildings, including a school built without proper permits.

The move to ban the motorized tricycles started in downtown Cairo and surrounding suburbs in a decision that went into effect last month, with intentions to be extended to others parts of the country. Per the decision, a number of tok toks were seized in the restricted area and drivers were fined 1,500 EGP ($191.)
The government has mounted similar bids to alleviate the traffic congestion prevailing in capital’s streets on a daily basis.

In August 2014, the government started moving hundreds of street vendors, occupying main streets in downtown to Torgoman garage in Cairo.
In January, a multi-story underground parking garage was opened in Cairo’s Tahrir Square. As a consequence, idling or parking in main downtown streets was banned.
