A conscript was killed and a police officer injured Tuesday morning after militants on motorcycles opened fire on a security checkpoint south of Giza, Youm7 reported.
“Conscript Mahmoud al-Sayed was killed and Lieutenant Sharaf Abdel Halim was injured after unknown assailants opened fire on them nearby a checkpoint in Giza’s southern district of Badrashin while patrolling Cairo-Asyut agricultural road,” the Interior Ministry said in a statement Tuesday.
The perpetrators fled the scene while security forces have reinforced their presence in the area searching for the assailants, the statement added.
Egypt has witnessed a significant rise in militancy since the military-backed ouster of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013 following mass protests against his rule. According to the Interior Ministry, militant attacks have killed more than 500 security personnel since then.
