The Egyptian-Sudanese dispute over the sovereignty of the Halayeb Triangle will be solved “amicably,” undersecretary at the Sudanese Foreign Ministry Abdel Ghani Naeem said Friday.
“President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi and his Sudanese counterpart Omer al-Bashir agreed in a phone call to resolve the issue. Khartoum’s firm policy is addressing problems with Egypt cordially,” Naeem was quoted by Sudan Tribune Friday.
The issue surfaced again as the region is listed among constituencies in Egypt’s first phase of parliamentary elections carried out last week. The voter turnout at Halayeb Triangle reached 40 percent.
This week, Bashir revealed that he requested Saudi mediation on the border dispute with Egypt, according to the Sudan Tribune.
The contested border area has been under de facto Egyptian administration since the mid-1990s, but both countries have jockeyed for its control for over a century.
