Al-Nour Salafi party has demanded an official investigation into the killing Saturday of the only candidate they have fielded for the parliamentary elections in North Sinai.
The Secretary General of Al-Nour party in North Sinai, Mostafa Abdel Rahman was shot dead in Arish by unknown assailants as he left his residence.
North Sinai is among 13 provinces voting in the second phase of legislative elections slated for November 22-23 inside Egypt, where a total of 226,564 have the right to vote.
The province has been a hotbed of insurgency since the ouster of former president Mohamed Mursi in July 2013, after protests against his rule.
On Saturday morning, an bomb targeting a military vehicle went off killing a police officer and two conscripts and injuring eight others in the city of al-Arish.
The armed forces, in coordination with police, are engaged in the second phase of a security operation dubbed "The Right of the Martyr", the first phase of which began early September and lasted 16 days, which resulted in the killing of more than 500 militants, according to army statements.
Described as "Egypt's largest military action in North Sinai," the operation targets sites in Rafah, Arish and Sheikh Zuweid, all towns in northern areas of the peninsula, said a military statement then.
Aswat Masriya cannot independently verify the content of army statements. Anti-terrorism legislation imposes heavy fines on news organizations that contradict official numbers.
