Democracy is not an important commodity in our country or even in the region. It’s rare and precious, but finds nobody to care for. We should stop talking about democracy since many people are talking about in media and in streets. Yet, they don’t understand what democracy is.
In fact, there is no place for democracy in our country. The typical Egyptian citizen doesn’t feel he or she needs democracy or civil state. He or she has voted several times for religious country and accepted a military state for more than 65 years. We need to practice democracy starting with equality.
The major part of the problem is that several Egyptian institutions and officials think they are above the law as well as accountability. They despise other citizens and consider them nothing.
Therefore, we can’t call officials or even thieves to account. It’s normal then to find corruption everywhere and to find our resources wasted and stolen as well.
Equality is the core of democracy, and it is much more important than elections. Thus, before achieving equality, there is no need for democracy or even elections.
