Exceptional circumstances can never be pretexts for torture,” Egypt’s former vice president Mohamed ElBaradei tweeted after reports emerged about three people dying in Egypt as a result of police brutality over the past week.
"In light of enforced disappearances, tortures, repressive laws and unjust verdicts, do we seek to understand the concept of ‘State of law’ that begins and ends at human dignity and freedom? That’s absurd,” the Nobel Peace Prize winner said on Saturday.
ElBaradei has been a persistent and vocal commentator of the human rights situation in Egypt since he moved to Austria following his resignation from vice-presidency in 2013. He quit the post in apparent protest of a violent security clampdown on protests demanding the reinstatement of ousted president Mohamed Morsi.
