A suicide bomber attacked a Shiite mosque in Baghdad on Wednesday, killing at least 11 people and wounding 20 in an assault claimed by the Islamic State group.
Interior Ministry spokesman Brig. Gen. Saad Maan said the attacker detonated his bomb in the doorway of the mosque as worshippers were exiting after midday prayers. He confirmed the toll.
The ISIS group claimed the attack in a statement circulated online by its supporters. The claim bore the group's logo and resembled previous claims issued by the extremists. ISIS has repeatedly targeted Iraq's Shiite majority, who the Sunni extremists view as apostates.
Iraqi forces backed by U.S.-led airstrikes have struggled to roll back the insurgents since they swept across large areas in the country's north and west in the summer of 2014.
Iraqi forces advanced on the western city of Ramadi, the provincial capital of Anbar province, earlier this week, capturing a military operations center and a neighborhood on the outskirts of the city. ISIS militants captured Ramadi in May in a major setback for Iraqi troops.
