A 25-year-old woman was killed and 14 others injured in a road accident north of Upper Egypt’s governorate of Aswan Monday morning, Youm7 reported.
The accident occurred when a private car collided with a public transport bus near Kom Ombo city, 45 kilometers north of Aswan, Aswan security directorate source told Youm7.
Initial investigations revealed the accident was caused due to the cars speeding and lack of visibility due to mist, according to the source.
The Egyptian Meteorological Authority had warned that Monday would witness the peak of a wave of unstable weather.
Civil protection forces rushed to the site and the injured were transferred to a nearby hospital, the source said, adding that at least six of the injured passengers were students on their way to school.
The Ministry of Health has previously reported that about 21,000 are killed and 150,000 injured annually on Egypt’s roads in traffic accidents.
According to a report issued by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) in April 2015, an average of 17 people died per day in road accidents in Egypt in 2014.
Official figures spotted a 7.5 percent decline in accidents rate in 2014 with a total of 14,403 road in comparison to 2013 (15,578 accidents,) according to the report.
It added that human error caused 59.2 percent of all 2014 road accidents, while 19.3 percent were caused by technical failure.
Egypt has the Middle East’s highest road fatality rate, according to the report.
