Anti-gov't protest near Abdeen Square

CAIRO - Political activists staged a protest in Cairo on Tuesday against what they said plans to hand power to the president's son.

The protesters, including activists from the opposition movement Kefaya (Enough) chanted anti-Government slogans such as "No, no to succession. No to Gamal, no to Alaa".

The protest was near Abdeen Square in central Cairo, close to the former king's palace.

President Hosni Mubarak, 82, in power since 1981, has not said if he will run in the 2011 election.

"Down, down with military rule," protesters also chanted.

The protest was organised by April 6 Youth Movement, Kefaya (Enough) and other groups who regularly arrange demonstrations.

Anti-riot police cordoned off the protest near Abdeen Square in central Cairo. But no clashes between the police and protesters were reported.
