Eleven alleged members of the Muslim Brotherhood were referred Monday to a military trial for possessing 52 bombs, Youm7 reported.
The defendants planned to use the bombs in attacks in 10th of Ramadan city in Sharqia, according to Zagazig prosecution.
The “terrorist cell” rented an apartment to manufacture explosives to vandalize gas pipelines and electric transformers, according to the Homeland Security investigations.
The defendants said prominent members of the Brotherhood fund them, according to the prosecution.
Some youth from Sharqia have reportedly been radicalized by extremist preachers trying to recruit them to join the fight in Syria. Two men from Sharqia were arrested before leaving for Syria, Youm7 reported Sunday.
Sixteen people from Sharqia were referred to the prosecution Aug. 29 after they “were proven to have been in touch” with the Islamic State group.
On Nov. 6, two people wanted for belonging to a “terrorist group” were killed inside a car bomb, killing a bystander.
In August, the Interior Ministry announced it arrested seven men based in Sharqia who formed “terrorist cells” and are implicated in several attacks in the governorate.
Pylons and power transformers have been bombed in Sharqia, as well as other cities in Egypt, in the past two years.
