Egypt’s Court of Cassation rejected Saturday appeals from 61 pro-Muslim Brotherhood (MB) defendants against earlier court rulings of 15 years in prison each over charges of protesting and sabotaging public properties in Cairo downtown’s Ramses Square in 2013, Youm7 reported.
On Oct. 1, 2014, the convicts, including four women, received 15 years in jail and were fined 20, 000 EGP ($2,554.25) each by Cairo Criminal Court. Five other convicts were sentenced to 10 years in prison and fined 20, 000 EGP each over the same charges. The court ruled that all convicts should be put under the police surveillance for five years after spending their jail terms.
The prosecution has charged the convicts of murdering, attempted murder, illegal protesting, weapon possessing, and attacking public properties in incidents took place on Oct. 6, 2013 in Ramses square during protest against the ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.
Meanwhile, the Court of Cassation accepted the appeals of other 18 convicts who have received sentences of five years in jail over illegal protesting, and attempting to storm Kafr al-Sheikh police station, Youm7 reported.
Kafr el-sheikh convicts have been detained in a protest against the dispersal of pro-Muslim Brotherhood sit-ins of Rabaa and Nahda squares in August 2013.
Last week, eleven alleged members of the banned Brotherhood group were referred to a military trial for possessing 52 bombs, Youm7 reported. The defendants planned to use the bombs in attacks in 10th of Ramadan city in Sharqia, according to Zagazig prosecution.
Egypt has outlawed the Muslim brotherhood group in December 2013, following the ouster of Morsi after mass protests against his rule.
Hundreds of MB members and supporters were detained and given different sentences of imprisonments and death penalty over charges of killing, inciting violence, attacking public prosperities, illegal protesting, and belonging to banned group. Others MB members and supporters fled Egypt abroad.
