Egyptian Parliament Speaker Ali Abdel Aal decided Tuesday not to accept resignation submitted by Parliamentarian Kamal Ahmed, Youm7 reported.
The decision came hours after Ahmed announced his resignation from Egypt’s newly elected House of Representative, only two days after its first session, over disagreement with “the uncivilized behavior of some deputies,” according to Youm7.
Several newspapers and websites reported that Ahmed submitted his resignation for health reasons. In addition to health reasons and his discontent with the way parliament is being run.
The inaugural session of parliament, which was held Sunday, witnessed several breaches by MPs to the script of the constitutional oath as well as side conversations between members that were heard through the microphones.
During the parliament’s procedural session held Sunday, Ahmed lost the parliamentary speaker elections, after collecting 36 votes, to Ali Abdel Aal who collected 401 votes.
Several deputies tried to persuade Ahmed to refrain from resigning, according to Youm7. However, Ahmed said his resignation is due to “health reasons.”
Parliamentarian Farag Amer told Youm7 that a group of 40 deputies submitted a request to the parliament speaker Ali Abdel Aal “to freeze the resignation.”
Ahmed’s resignation is the first incident of its kind in the newly-elected parliament.
Ahmed, who was an MP in the 1976, 2000 and 2005 parliaments, ran the 2015 parliament election as an independent candidate at Alexandria’s Al Attareen constituency.
