The State Council’s Administrative Court turned down a lawsuit that demanded activist Wael Ghoneim be stripped of his Egyptian citizenship on Sunday.
The verdict was handed down after the court received an advisory report from the council’s Commissioners Board recommending that the case, which was brought to the court by influential lawyer Samir Sabry, be dismissed for lack of direct interest.
Ghoneim ran "We Are All Khaled Saeed", the Facebook page that lobbied for the 2011 uprising that toppled former president Hosni Mubarak.
In his petition, Sabry argued that Ghoneim, a former Middle East marketing manager for Google, was backed by “foreign powers”, namely the United States, and “falsely introduced himself as a nationalist and a revolutionary,” during the uprising.
