Celebrations of the annual “Week of Prayer for Christian Unity” will begin Saturday and continue for the next seven days in churches across Egypt, El Watan news reported.
The event aims to bring together all Egyptian Christians from different churches and denominations to pray for the unity of the Christian faith, will be held in coordination with the Middle East Council of Churches and Egypt’s Council of Churches.
Many choirs are scheduled to contribute to the annual event with spiritual songs and hymns with sermons and masses performed at several churches across the country.
The event is usually held January 18-25 for most western churches in the northern hemisphere but since the Egyptian Coptic church uses a different calendar, the event, as the case in Christmas and Easter, is celebrated two weeks later.
Christians are estimated to comprise 10 percent of Egypt’s population, and the vast majority of Christians ( approximately 90 percent) are Coptic Orthodox.
