President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has declared the transfer of legislative powers to parliament.
During his speech before parliament on Saturday, Sisi said Egypt had accomplished the political roadmap and that the country had been saved from those who were working for their own interests.
He added that Egyptians had selected respectful members of parliament who represent the people and their wishes.
“I declare the transfer of the legislative powers to you after being held by the executive powers due to an emergency. I hope that God grants you success,” he said. “People expect you to fulfill their hopes. Our people declare to the world from here that they have established the basis for democracy and were able to win freedom and democracy.”
Sisi arrived earlier on Saturday to give a speech before members of parliament at the beginning of the new parliamentary session.
The official gazette earlier published Sisi’s decision to meet MPs on Saturday at 10 a.m.
Tight security measures were in force at the parliament building ahead of the speech. Security personnel checked the dentities of passers-by on the street separating between Cinet and parliament.
